At least 943 Pakistani women and girls were murdered last year for allegedly defaming their family’s honor. The statistics highlight the growing scale of violence suffered by many women in conservative Muslim Pakistan, where they are frequently treated as second-class citizens and there is no law against domestic violence. Activists say the government needs to do more to prosecute murderers in cases largely dismissed by police as private, family affairs.
While American kids everywhere are burning their parents’ hard earned money occupying a street near you to secure their “right” for things like government sponsored birth control programs and zero interest home loans (Thank you, Barney Frank!), women in other parts of the world are getting beaten TO DEATH for refusing to marry some a$$hole that their mom picked out of convenience because she knows his mom and he lives down the road.
The US may not have everything figured out, but at least if you’re a woman you can wear shorts and a short sleeved tee shirt when you walk down the street (THANK GOD (nsp)). So the next time someone derisively sneers “Only in America…” maybe you can remind that a$$hole that at least here a woman can also pretty much sleep with whatever idiot she wants to without risking getting the sh1t kicked out of her by her dh father.
